This course is delivered via a live webinar which is trainer led and will be delivered via 'Microsoft Teams'
What is the aim of the training?
Following on from the success of the conference ‘The Journey To Belonging’, hosted in October 2018 by Oxfordshire County Council, this training will inform practitioners about a range of issues affecting unaccompanied asylum seeking young people, including age assessments and immigration. The training is hosted in partnership between OCC’s Unaccompanied Children’s team, solicitors Turpin Miller, and charity Asylum Welcome, and will give a well-rounded perspective on unaccompanied young people’s journeys through different services.
The Unaccompanied Children’s social work team will talk through age assessments, including the process young people go through and dispelling common myths about what does or does not happen. They will cover how practitioners can give feedback into the process.
Asylum Welcome will cover asylum support and challenges to age assessment outcomes, including information about other organisations who offer support. They will answer questions such as ‘what happens to UASC assessed as being over 18?’ and ‘what happens if UASC become All Rights Exhausted (ARE)?’
A local immigration solicitor will cover the UK asylum and immigration processes, including human trafficking, Legal Aid, Home Office interviews, delays and appeals to asylum outcomes.
