This module deals with anxiety in primary school aged children; please book onto the 'Anxieties Workshop Module' if you primarily work with secondary aged children.

Overcoming Childhood Anxiety

This session highlights when anxiety might be a problem (as opposed to a ‘normal’ developmental phase), describes different anxiety disorders and how these can be recognised and discussed. It explores why treatment is important and gives a detailed overview of a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy approach aimed at parents. Key strategies to use within professional roles are highlighted, and the role of parental/adult behaviour (how they respond to the child’s anxiety) is explored

This course will explore the following:

  • An understanding of what anxiety is and how that may look in primary aged children
  • Increasing practitioners' confidence to talk to children about their difficulties
  • An understanding of what 'Cognitive Behaviour Therapy' (CBT) for anxiety in children looks like and why parents are well placed to deliver this to their children
  • An understanding of what practitioners can do to best support children in the classroom (and children and parents at home)
