The purpose of this course is to consider the specific needs and associated safeguarding risks that may be experienced by children and young people who are LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or other) or questioning their sexuality or gender identity, including children and young people with LGBT+ parents/carers.
The aims of this course are to:
- Better understand LGBT+ terminology and identities
- Understand the legal context, including Ofsted requirements and what schools/colleges/youth services should be doing
- Consider the impact of anti-LGBT+ discrimination and how to challenge it
- Understand the safeguarding risks in relation to children and young people who are LGBT+ and ways to mitigate them
- Reflect on the transformative power of adopting a restorative approach
- Consider ways to create safe spaces / LGBT inclusive spaces
- Reflect on the importance of challenging gender stereotypes
- Seek to understand the experience of LGBT+ families
- Seek to understand the experience of trans and gender questioning children and young people and how to support them
- Consider how this relates to your own role, identify next steps to improve practice and consider your role in inter-agency working
- Share knowledge and expertise
- Signpost guidance, resources and local support
Refreshments: Delegates will need to bring their own lunch and a reusable cup for hot drinks. Water will be available.
